Just a quick post...... I'm changing the fork oil on my 2004 Factory ohlins......the manual states the oil level should be 85mm with the spring IN.....in what position should the rebound damper rod be, fully up or down when doing the measurement ? T.I.A

The manual states: • Raise the washer and the damping cylinder assembly. Then: • Fill the fork with the specified fluid, up to correct level. Use a dipstick to determine correct level. Oil quantity: 500 cu cm. Oil level: 85 mm (from slider rim). • Accurate oil level measurement is only ensured when the slider is perfectly vertical and fully down. Oil level must be the same in both fork legs. I read the same in the manual, what confused me was I watched a video on Youtube and the mechanic measured the level with the damper rod full down ! I'll go with the manual Thanks

| Depending on how you found the forks before, don’t necessarily go with 85mm. For me the forks ramp up too much at that level and are harsh on big bumps. I ran 95mm and still never bottomed the forks but many run different variations to suit them. |

Doesn’t really matter if the rod is up or down as long as the oil height is adjusted to suit. 85 with road down is probably like 95 rod up. The end result is the same. Make sure the rod is pumped whichever way you do it to purge the air or you will get a false reading. Put a finger over the hole in the rod or the oil will end up on the ceiling.

When I do a fork oil level I always set the level and then leave them standing overnight as it invariably drops as small amounts of air find their way out. |
