Took out the " other" bike for a run up to the old mans butchers shop for some breakfast fodder for the morning today ( essential) after doing a full service on it ready for a big trip next year if we're allowed out of the country by then. I'm always amazed how lovely it is to ride and ridiculously quick considering its bulk.

The handling is excellent, tons of torque only real weak point is the brakes. As it's the sp it gets the blue spots from the original R1 but compared to the Daytona and my trackbike they feel very weak and wooden.
I inherited it from my father in law he's owned it from new in 1999 and put 46k on her but it's been cleaned to death haha really is spotless. Unfortunately he dropped it while cleaning it and got trapped under it he's in his 70's and decided to let it go and I'd always said I'd buy it couldn't let anyone else take it she's part of the family. We're taking out the triumph tridants when they are released as its replacement he's still itching to get out on two wheels and the new triumph is perfect for him. I might take out a 765rs instead. The reg is really cool I'm a fan of bike specific regs and no one can believe the bikes 22 years old! My sister has just emmigrated to the south of Italy so I'm riding there with my dad in the spring. Brakes and suspension overhaul first aswell as replacing hoses and seals etc but all OEM spec this is one bike that's staying 100% original I promised

I've got the Honda version of the XJR, big and heavy, the weight drops off it once it's rolling.
Put it on the dyno this summer to have the PCIII set up properly. Really lazy engine putting out 127bhp now and a great alternative to riding the Aprilia. Handling is surprising good, but it really needs the oem brake lines replacing with braided, but with ABS those 7 lines don't come cheap. Braking is decent though since it got Brembo sintered up front. |

Lovely machine too Steve. I considered braided lines but I'm going to keep it original. Really randomly a cb1300 exactly the same as yours parked next to me yesterday thought it was the same until I spotted your exhaust! I've no idea what the power is on the yam but 127 is very healthy on yours. They are a great alternative to a sports bike I'd like to say they slow you down a bit but speed comes very easily on these beasts. Thanks for the comments John my father in law has doted on it he'll be made up when I let him know.

Lovely and clearly very well cared for. I've often considered one of those for less 'focused' rides especially if I want to go two up. As you say a strong motor and as an aside that's the engine that the Legend race cars use and would propel mine to 130 at Croft. PS: Adam, they were speced at 130hp (From memory) or thereabouts and actually a 1250 |

Couple of web sites state 105bhp for a standard XJR, which is surprising. But then again, these bikes, as in all the big cube Jap multis, weren't about top speed, but torque and brick out house un stressed engines.

Cheers Ray thought you'd like it It really is mint I've just got to keep it that way. Never knew the motor was in a race car . I've had a look and Steve is correct above 105bhp but it means nothing to me really it's just a smooth and enjoyable experience I'll save my power chasing for the track.

As you say bike specs show 105hp but the legend cars website still quotes them as 122hp. Who knows but they are a torquey engine and great fun and the racing is manic! They still use the FJ/XJ(R) 1200/1250 motors in the UK although they swapped to the MT-09 engine a couple of years ago in the US. They have a a PTO to a split propshaft with an inline reverse gearbox to a Toyota Celica rear axle. Spaceframe chassis and 1930's bodywork - in 5/8ths scale! My mate has just won this years championship. I used to race with his Dad and Uncle and he also happens to be my daily driver road car mechanic. Sorry to hijack but if you're interested, link to Legend racing website below: |

What made them go for a motorcycle engine?
I can only guess at a more compact engine with good power to weight ratio.

One of the mods they do to the xjr is to fit the carb to head inlet stubs off an early fj as they are unrestricted. The originals on a xjr have a smaller diameter hole through them whereas the fj inlets have holes the same as the carb and head. No rejetting is necessary, this takes them from 105 to just short of 130. They are almost a straight fit, they are about 10mm shorter so the airbox has to be moved 10mm nearer the engine by adjusting the bracket. Another mod is to shorten the inlet pipe inside the air filter as this goes almost to the other side of the airbox and restricts air flow. The last mod is a different timing plate on the end of the crank which advances the timing by about 4 degrees, this just sweetens the low rpm and low throttle use. You've've probably guessed by now what bike i have next to my falco.

I guess, just as you say, compact as the car all up weighs only 500Kg . The class is aimed at keeping costs down and the engines are sealed with minimum mods allowed to engine or chassis. Dynojeted carbs and stiffer valve springs (They do start to float at higher rpm) are about all you can do. |

Have you looked into bike breakdown/recovery. I haven't been abroad on a bike for a decade but I'm told most policies have an age limit on them nowadays. The bike that is, not the rider!

No mate not looked into anything yet don't want to get my hopes up for anything until we've got the green light to go lost count of how many things I've cancelled re booked and cancelled again this year.

Sorry, didn't mean it like that Last time I went I didn't have any. My mate broke down but fortunately we manged to trace the problem otherwise we would have been stuffed. I don't even have it for the UK at the moment but thinking I should with a 19 year old bike and a 16 year old car. Both run great but you just never know! You will probably need a separate insurance Green Card (Or whatever they decide to call them) next year too as we will no longer be in the EU |

Haha no offence taken bud. I'm the same as you no cover on anything. My focus is 17years old, XJR is 21 and even the 675 is 12 now but when I bought the bongo I didn't risk it.....she's 25! I think it would be wise if I go away and as you say probably all sorts of new rules to follow now.

Hey badapple.
Wish my xjr was as clean as yours ( xjr 1300 sp 2002) I recently did the fj 3cv inlet rubbers upgrade, wow what a difference to the mid range. Had to mill the airbox mounting slot at the back of the fuel tank about 10 mm. Done a couple of 2up Euro tours to Switzerland and didn't miss a beat. Hope you get away next summer.

Hi Mad dog how's tricks?
Thanks for the kind comments regarding the condition I'll be showing my father in law this thread when I see him next and I know he'll be proud we all like to think we care about our bikes none more so I think than the members on here the bar is certainly set high! I think it will be the perfect touring machine. As much as I love modding bikes and it sounds like huge gains to be had I'm sticking to keeping it stock. It must really fly though because its not exactly lethargic as standard.
