Hi all. Back again with what may be another daft question.
Here goes. My 99 RSV MILLE has started playing up. Symptoms are in warms up allot quicker than it used too and generally runs hotter than it used too. Started experiencing this a few weeks back when we had the hot weather but now it's cooler again it's not how it used to be. Used to sit at about 65 degrees cruising on the motorway. Now in lucky if it stays below 80. Hasn't had any spannering recently so can rule that out as not bad maintenance. Checked oil and coolant and levels all correct and oil is oil and coolant is coolant with no contamination between the 2. Cooling fins on rads and oil cooler clean and not clogged up so have decided it's not that. Fans kick in arround 94 and run and stop fine so my only thoughts is has my impellor on my water pump failed or could it be something else. All advice and suggestions welcome. Also is it easy to get too to check and remove etc. Handy with my spanners etc but can't find my manual lol. |

Hi TT
Have you checked that all of the relevant water pipes are getting warm? Blockages or an air lock would show up there (although I would not expect that to occur without some visible leakage). If it is maintaining temp and the fans cool it down it is unlikely to be the water pump. Might be the thermostat. It sounds like you had a low temp version fitted (they are supposed to open at 65 degrees C; standard is 75). It is certainly easy to test - take it out and put it in a pan of water, heat it up and check the temp it opens with a thermometer. The housing is on the right side of the bike (as you sit on it) and will only require the removal of three clips. Make sure you have replacements available - the OE is not reusable. It's part 15 in the attached.http://www.af1racing.com/store/Scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=924 Cheers Dave |

Fans should kick in @100 deg C. Most folk find they trigger at about 97 deg C. Normal running temp at cruising speed is usually around 74-76 deg C, so your previous figure of 65 deg C sounds a wee bit low. To that end I'd agree with Dave, sounds like you might have a low temp thermostat fitted.

Cheers for the replies lads. I had initially thought it could have leaked somewhere and then pulled air in when cold to possibly cause an air lock but system is full to the brim and not lost any plus no visible leeks. As for possible blockage I suppose it can happen but can't think how as system hasn't been open for months so really can't see it being that. Planning to do clearances next week so will have a check on the thermostat and maybe replace while I'm at it. Just seems a bit odd. Sometimes I scare myself by thinking too much lol. If cooling system seems to be working then is something else causing it to get hotter quicker by overheating. I hate my brain sometimes.

Are you sure both fans are running? One of mine failed last year and the bike ran a good 5 - 10 deg higher.

coolant has a life span, flush it with flush and refill, even with inhibiters, you still get a build up of crap, even more so if you use tap water, do the simple things first!
if you plan on keeping the bike use waterless coolants all my bikes runthem including my MV it never over heats, where as before it blown hoses off trying to get into oulton park in traffic cheers |

Nice to here positive actual experience of waterless coolants on here as it has been debated many times and I am determined to try it at some point. |

i even run my 2mokes on it, the stuff works, i tested that by removing cap at high temps and no gas build up, evans do a low viscosity as well, my MV didnt like the thick stuff rang them up and they sent 5l free of charge, didnt even cost me postage!!
my v4 is on the stuff! |

Good info for the memory banks - must try it soon.
In my research, Evans do say that the waterless coolant can run slightly hotter as it is more effective at taking heat out of the engine, and it is the coolant temp you are measuring not the engine temp (Which may actually be lower than before). However you have real life experience and I have only read their website that's why your info is so useful. |

Interesting info. Might try some unless I find a problem when I get to look at it properly. Both fans working fine.
