I wonder if I could solicit some opinion on a cut that I've spotted in my rear tyre: It's about 15mm across. I stuck a piece of thin card in to see how deep it is: and it goes in about 7mm. It's not quite perpendicular to the tread, so that 7mm is probably about 5 or 6 mm of depth. It's a new tyre with about 100 miles on it, so there is still a lot of rubber there. I'm not sure whether this is a concern or not - I'd rather err on the side of safety, so if it needs replacing, so be it. What do you think, or what would you do?

Tricky one
If you aren’t happy or concerned you will need to replace. I’m a total chancer so I’d just monitor it but that’s me not you! |

Bugger! That angle will make it about 6mm deep I reckon. What's the tread depth on that tyre further round the circumference? That will tell you how deep it has gone into the carcass. Only the surface will wear and it's obviously not leaking or you would not be asking. The only way to be sure is to replace it but my S22's have just passed 4K miles and will get me to the end of this season so it does seem such a waste. What about removing it and getting a patch fitted where the hole would be if it was through? |

I just measured the depth of the tread right next to it, and it's 6mm, so about the depth of the cut. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing!

Playing with fire given the depth of the cut.

You will probably never have a problem with it but it will always be at the back of your mind and for the sake of about £150 I would change it.

Peace of mind is worth more to me than a tyre and if it fetched you off while riding imagine what that would cost you.

I am a tight BarSteward, and I would change it as It would cost a lot more fixing the bike

If it were mine I'd probably replace it but I might be tempted to continue riding it with careful monitoring but only if I'd treated the tyre with puncture sealant for added security and I 'd also probably be tempted to stick a large patch under there as well for belt & braces Total costs probably £30 But as has been said though, only you know what would make you confident and having absolute trust in your tyres is a must to enable you to relax while riding,so as you asked I suspect you already know the answer.

I think I have a new tyre in my future! Just as well it's not a brand new S22 that's damaged. Oh wait, it is...

It sucks I know but just write it off, move on and think of all the other tyres in your life this hasn’t happened to.
Probably the only way I would be able to move on!

its one of those things imagine if you never noticed it you probably would of done the tyres life cycle without problem, but find something like this and you would be kicking yourself if anything happened.

Prise the cut apart, get a torch into the cut and see if the cords are visible. If not, I'd ride the bike and keep an eye on it after every ride.

If its not cut to cords the carcass wont be damaged and its a cut in the rubber that would get worn down anyway. We get similar cuts on aircraft tyres, if they're not ctc they're good to go.
I understand why you decided to replace it tho'.

Hi Bladerunner, as much I would like to say puta patch in it, i would not risk it, bike and your life.
It is a crying shame that it is a new tyre almost, but anything with defects is it new. I know it will cost you money in the long run but, your life and the bike is what is paramount. Change it, somebody would probably buy it with a patch on ebay. But it is a big risk, not worth it. It would cost a lot more if it went wrong ✌️👍
