The Big One: Tail End Run?
Encompassing Kent, Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.
During my travels relating to work I have come across some
glorious roads and routes which I feel would be suitable for one of our forum
runs. Technically the actual run will start at Thetford and route through to
Gorleston on-sea (GT Yarmouth) where we can break for lunch and rendezvous at
The Cliff Hotel. The return run could easily partly replicate the out route but
to cover new ground I propose following the A12 skirting the coast line with
the possibility of a final stop off subject to consensus at Burnham on crouch.
The final leg would replicate the out route again. I anticipate from the
Dartford (first R.V.) subject to a visit to Burnham on Crouch that this run
will be in the region of 300 miles +/- 30mls. The in depth route and suggested
R.V's are illustrated below. I must add the caveat that I work away for a
living and at short notice may be despatched to site and so it is extremely
difficult to confirm availability but the two suggested dates represent at
present my best window.
Dates: 21/28 September 2014.
R.V's and Times: There will be fifteen minutes grace -
please be on time we can't afford to wait!
1; 07.00Hrs: Dartford Esso S/Stn (DA1 2PZ) located on the
A225 Princes Road adjacent A282 and Dartford
Crossing.
2; 07.45Hrs: Subject to demand: Thurrock Service Area Grays
Essex - Please confirm any requirement!
3; 09.45Hrs: McDonalds Restaurant: Forest Retail Park:
London Road Thetford IP24 3QL.
4; 12.00Hrs: The Cliff Hotel: Gorleston on-Sea: DR31 6DH.
Itinery.
To make the best of a bad job (travelling from Kent ) and to
avoid excessive and boring use of M/Ways due to the start location being Thetford
Norfolk - I propose travelling East on the A13 to intersect with the A130 joining
the A12 at junction 17. North of Chelmsford we shall join the A130/A131 and
basically run through all the towns and villages to reach Bury St Edmunds and
the final leg onto Thetford via the A134. Breakfast snack and conveniences as
you wish at McDonalds. All being well we shall depart Thetford on route to The
Cliff Hotel approx 10.30Hrs.The run to Diss is via the A1066. Diss onwards
passing through various villages and Bungay via the A143 for the final cut
across the broads. The Cliff Hotel has a fabulous decked area overlooking the
pier and beech with esplanade etc. Lunch, snacks a rest or walk down to the Beach
and esplanade etc. I anticipate arrival around midday and allow 1.30Hrs for
this break. The return run along the A12 via Lowestoft is again spectacular and
ideally suited to bikes.
From Ipswich area
South wards we are stuck with dual carriageway but subject to confirmation we
could break off the return run with a visit to Burnham on Crouch and a cold
one! The main route is predominately well surfaced nay billiard smooth with
varying degrees of undulations, large flat curves beautiful scenic countryside
extremely enjoyable in any form of transport. As always this is not a race but
we do endeavour to make good progress where conditions dictate. The main thing
is we all get out and get back safely and help to promote motorcycling. I do
not use a smart phone and replies and responses to queries will be limited to
evenings so please bear with me. As usual - friends we know and trust are
welcome on any make and model of bike here's hoping for an enjoyable day and
chance to meet and catch-up with old and hopefully make some new acquaintances.
Regards Richard.

I could be up for this, my old man lives about 5 mins from the Cliff Hotel. I know the roads around there pretty well (not lived in Gorleston for nearly 20 years)
The B1136 from Haddiscoe/Toft Monks (A143) is a good road too. It goes from the A143 to the A146 you can then head down the A146 to meet the A143 and then onto the A1066 from Diss to Thetford (or reverse if coming from Thetford). For any car fans the Lotus Factory is not far up the A11 at Hethel and there is a Ducati Dealership not far from there at Newton Flopman on the A140. |

Hey Mark, thanks for the input - it did seem that it was only going to be me - Billy no mates! I shall be at Southern Cross all day Saturday ensuring that they extract a minimum of 130 BHP before I leave! If we can get input for numbers and date either 21st or 28th that would be great - Is either date good for you? Keep an eye on the weather it would be a shame to have a wet run on such great Tarmac! |

Hi All,
Due to no interest/availability I have decided to scrub the run - will propose this again in the future. Great shame - if we received the early turn out numbers would have been awesome! Red Rat: If you want a run round the south east coast Sunday give me a shout!

Hey Mate,
take the money I'm still waiting on the postie to see if my Forza EEPROM Chip makes it allowing a trip up to Southern Cross on Saturday (Dyno Run). I could probably do with the extra week to get straight. If your up for it week Sunday have a run round the east coast end up in Rye or further if you like?
