Hi, does anybody know where I can get a suspension setup with a Maxton shock.
I have contacted both MCT and MHR both said why would you want to change an Ohlins for a Maxton. I would like to go somewhere that are happy to work with the Maxton preferably in the south East |

If you tell Richard your bike model, your weight and type of riding they will build a shock to suit. I have done that recently and it transformed the back end of my bike

I'm not sure any other suspension shop will work with Maxton stuff as it's all totally designed and built by Maxton themselves and works differently inside compared to the rest of them.
But as said assuming you had the gear custom made for you then Richard will be able to tell you how to fine tune it. Of course if you have bought the bike with the Maxton gear already fitted then all bets are off and it will have to go back to base and be rebuilt to suit your requirements That's the only downside to Maxton suspension,at least with Ohlins anyone and their dog will service them anywhere in the world. |

Are you talking comp/rebound setting if so watch some of Dave Moss YouTube set up videos. Griff has a good one to. Moving house this week otherwise could of done a bounce comparison with mine its set up pretty good now. But suspension is personal.

Yes that is good Paul, proves the tyre is getting punished.
The suspension was revalved and sprung for me, but I just wanted someone to set the whole thing up front and back ride height. None of them rated Maxton and really weren't really interested working with it. It's not far off, I almost regret putting on the Maxton with the reluctance of people to work with it. When I spoke to MCT, he said they had just fitted a Maxton shock to a SR1000 BMW which the customer bought and wanted it fitted and setup. He said now I going have phone him and tell him his shock is sh*t. I may just go back to a 190 tyre as the Maxton doesn't have the adjustment that the Ohlins had, mind you it's stopped tankslaping and to be fair I have only had one ride on it till the rear brake caliper gave out. So I think I get that fixed do the velocity stacks and the front brakes and do a couple of weeks of riding and then see where I am with it. |

Ive never used a Maxton shock but the amount of club racers and private road racers that do is pretty high I'd imagine and you can't tell me that a custom built Maxton shock is worse than a oem ohlins shock (which are pretty bottom of the barrel stuff where Ohlins is concerned if we are being honest)... id say that your Maxton is going to be head and shoulders better than the ohlins you had on before Rich... I've never used them for this purpose but IDP Moto at Silverstone circuit do a suspension set up service, £50.00 I think it was last time I looked so may be worth giving them a bell. http://www.idpmoto.com/services |

Sorry,I got the wrong end of the stick a bit,I thought you meant working on it internally, which as you've found meets with pretty much universal derision among the Ohlins community
You need to ask Richard as he will have built the unit or at least signed it off And as said, the amount of real road racers as well as short circuit guys who use Maxton stuff should tell you something about how good the kit is in a real world situation. Your tyre looks pretty good to me Oh,and Dave Moss is not very highly thought of by the Ohlins elite either, neither is Paul Theade of Racetech fame. Ohlins seems to be like what I imagine the Masons to be like Above anybody else and untouchable A few hours on the " Independent suspension forum" can be quite interesting |

It's a suspension forum set up by the great and good to be independent of Ohlins as I understand it. I think it was possibly as a result of some interference or censorship from that quarter in the past. Still mainly Ohlins biased and they won't divulge their trade secrets but you can read between the lines somewhat. It used to be an open forum when I joined but now it's access members only.

Is it the really dodgy looking http://45537.activeboard.com/? I'm always interested in learning more about suspension but don't want to end up losing a kidney on the dark web or something. |

I found my Maxton pretty simple to set up.
Sort your sag out first. Then move onto dampening. ISTR Griff did an idiots guide suspension setting up for numpties write up guide thingy?

Yes, he did, very informative and still on YouTube. The suspension forum is way, way beyond that. The guys that rip Ohlins apart for a living and build them properly seem to guide the unknowing in the right direction without actually telling them trade secrets. The site is safe, fear not Not too much Showa and hardly any Aprilia but it helps explain the suspension process. One of the past members of the first AP forum did a thread on his Showa setup that was very informative

I joined it the other day Ian. Really interesting stuff. Lots of talk about shim stacks and damping curves. The lengths some of the guys go to tweak their shocks shows that even getting a re-valve done at a shop is only going to be a ball park approach, better than just twiddling knobs but still a way from ideal. I found this the other day about setting up suspension that looks pretty good:

Have you come across Kev Cole's thoughts yet? I feel exactly like he found, basically the standard showa set up is not fit for purpose. Something that Maxton agree with also, I've tweaked my shim stacks along the lines of Kev's but even with modded valve bodies as well there are limits to what can be achieved. One of the best mods is to throw the showa fork seals as far as possible and use SKF green units, the reduction in stiction has to be seen to be believed. I believe this to be a first step before even thinking about valving, although as the forks need to be apart for the seals anyway it's more economic time wise to juggle the stacks while the legs are apart. The needle valves are a poor shape as well, too short and stubby to be really useful, out of all the supposed adjustment only about the first half turn does anything as past that the port is fully open. If I had the money which I don't, and the desire which is also lacking I'd go for the Maxton Big Piston fork conversion rather than bother with off the shelf Ohlins that still need sorting, but as Tifa has said elsewhere it's better but not night and day different. Just playing with the valving and oil/shim stacks is quite rewarding though, far better than paying someone to guess at a ball park setup. You probably won't get it right first time but it teaches you lots about cause and effect. I bought a set of crappy forks to get spare valves and shims and a spare set of radial Showa's so I can play with a set and just swap them in to tryout. Good fun if you have time to learn

Agree Ian. It's like a black art. Just when you think you've got it properly sorted.... I had irritating leaks on one of my Showas. Replaced seal, leaked again after a few thousand miles. Had both stancions re chromed, but still the same. Fitted SKF low friction seals...perfect. Like I've said...'tis a black art... |
