Today i put a deposit on the bike of my dreams. I was adamant that I was going to buy a bike already prepped for track, but this came up on fleabay last night at such a good price, I couldn't resist it. I'll need to sacrafice 1 or maybe 2 trackdays to cover the costs of the bike and prepping her for track use, but f**k it.... I have a V4!!!

14k, full dealer service history, just had the major valve service done (but I'm going to swing by AP on the way home to get them double checked)

Pick her up on Friday Big smile

I wasn't mate... I was after a track / race prepped jap4! But as I was browsing ebay last night this popped up... it had only been added a few hours before I saw it. There's 2 more bikes on ebay, same year, model, spec that were £2000 more... So after some quick man maths (adding up all the mods I 'need'), and a full check on the bikes reg, I went for it!

Mark I so pleased for you mate, like I said in my pm that was a brave decision about selling or braking your Rsv.
It looks like it paid off and if you are on track you got to have something up-to-date.
You could have spent loads more money on the RSV with no chance of ever getting even half of it back.
I have ridden my mate's RSV4 Rf and no matter how money I spend on mine it will never be a patch on it.
Anyway enjoy your lovely bike and you can put 200 tyres on it no problem and thanks for your help with that on of my favourite mods

Haha, yes 200's will fit this no problem, no idea what's on it now but they will stay on until she goes to the track, then some lovely sticky slicks will be going on.

It was a seriously tough call, in fact even the week before I broke it I was phoning Griff asking this and that about big bores. It was gut wrenching to start stripping all my hard work apart but once she was a pile of bits on the floor, I got over it pretty quickly. I think once the V4 is in the garage I won't have any regrets. Even when I broke it I never dreamed I would have got myself a V4, it really is a dream come true!

I think that is their USP, the sound. Not very track day friendly though with modern DB restrictions.

Definitely not. Luckily my local track (Knockhill) don't noise test. No idea what they put out but I'd hope it would pass a 105DB noisy day...

She's here! And already with a new exhaust!

Stopped at AP on the way up the road for a check over which included:

Valve clearance checks
Gearbox inspection
Oil & filter
Checking the nut behind the stator wasn't loose

This bike has been main dealer serviced all it's life.... and it shows! Never let these monkeys anywhere near your Aprilia!!! Copious amounts of gasket sealant EVERYWHERE, they even glued the airbox to the TB's with the stuff, numerous clips and sensors left unattached, dangling around. I would say Lewis and Al spend at least an hour scraping off sealant from everywhere. Oil was pretty filthy and a bit sludgy. But, valves were all good, and she now has a clean bill of health. Cam chain tensioners are a little noisy but apparently perfectly safe!

Now let the modding commence!!

Nice. Arrow make good stuff.

Ape have never got their dealer stuff sorted. Always have and likely always will have a large number of monkeys in the chain. Because they are relatively low volume and often an arse to deal with, the real pro dealers generally don't want to know.

Well... I've been busy!

First job (as is always the case, sadly) - she needed a proper good clean. Not just covered in silicon spray like the last owner did LOL To do the whole bike top to bottom took about 3 evenings

Next up... linkage bearings. Aprilia have stuck with the exact same design and bearings as the older models, so they will still need yearly servicing. Not a problem on the V4's, access is easy, you only need to remove the wheel! All 3 bearings had rusty coloured water in them, but were not past the point of no return - removed all the needles and cleaned everything up, packed with fresh grease, jobs a good un

Here's one for NB

Techspec tank pads (only £25 on ebay??)

Brembo RCS brake master & res, Robby Moto QAT (with the biggest cam of course) and Lightech magnesium clutch lever assembly

I manage to bump into the mirror the other day and snapped it off.... Was thinking of removing them anyway so no big deal, mirror blanks are in the post, and I'm getting cables made up to turn the side lights into indicators. Looks way better without them anyway!

These beautiful things are in the post

Still to do...

Buy & fit HM quickshifter
Replace all coolant hoses clips with proper jubilee ones
Fork seals need replaced
Fit new chain & sprockets
Ride the f**king thing (can't be long now for Spring to arrive?)

Well... I did end up borrowing some! But it's a small amount compared to the value of the bike, and will be paid off in a year... So no big deal Big smile

Posted By: Af1
Date Posted: 05 Feb 2017 at 18:32

I know it's not required for the mot, somethings that are not part of the mot can be not legal on the road (I've checked and mirrors are not a legal requirement on a motorcycle ! It's a modification does the insurance need to know ?

I like mirrors, it helps me to know my surroundings (looking round takes a couple of seconds from not looking forwards !)

Posted By: m9rko
Date Posted: 05 Feb 2017 at 19:00
It is something that takes getting used to. When I first rode a bike with no mirrors it felt really wrong. After a while you get used to it. I'm lucky enough to live out in the sticks, the only thing I really need to check my mirrors for is plod or other bikes catching up, either way a quick glance over the shoulder every now and then does the trick Thumbs Up

Insurance - yep they need to know about everything, I'm always sqeaky clean with that stuff, everything is declared. Give them an inch....

I'm still not 100% about the pipe... I like it better than the GPR1 that was on it before. But what I REALLY want is the SC Project CRT... such a shame it won't pass the noise test at pretty much any race track, UK or Europe?? Could use it at Knockhill but that's about it!

Like this one Mark but like you say it fooking loud, this is my mate's Rf 356 of 500.
Unbelievable to ride but I don't like doing it too much as it always make me want one.
He only does foreign trackdays so it's ok.
Sounds like no other exhaust.

Posted By: m9rko

Now see... If it gets on forign trackdays I'd probably go for it... Knockhill is my local one and they don't noise test so no problems there. I'd happily do one forign weekend a year and the rest at Knockhill (and none south of the border) if it meant I could have this exhaust!

The exhaust flapper valve is disconnected and wired open with a race ecu.
It only takes a 20mins to do the valve gives it a deeper note also cleaner pickup low down he says.

Posted By: m9rko

Mines already got the race ECU. Exhaust valve motor / cables all removed. The default position of the valve is open (ie if you remove the cables and let it spring back into place), so no need to wire it in any way?

I really do want that CRT exhaust. The sound is pure motogp

Plus you are almost guaranteed the weather he only does foreign trackdays, three days in a row sometimes.

That's good to know! I did look up the NL website and it does say there's a 105DB limit but perhaps it's not strictly enforced.

I've managed to pull a few strings and the CRT exhaust may well be happening now. Watch this space!

I wouldn't let my bad luck put you off. Valve train would appear to be a weak spot over all year RSV4's... But most bikes are fine. It's just a calculated risk. I might even take another punt one day. It's worth it just for the soundtrack

You can pick up a nice 1198 for that kind of cash Mark, don't you fancy one of them? I do love the F4's, not entirely convinced on the reliability of them though🤔. My mate chopped his in for an S1000RR , although he chops them in every couple of month's .

I'm getting another road bike for the rest of this year. Dunno what yet. MV F4 and Honda SP2's are taking my fancy. But really I don't know... Next year I'll sell up again and buy a full time track bike (jap4 this time!)

Gutted for you mate but always wanted a Honda SP2 lol

Yep it sucks to be me right now guys but really, things could be worse... I won't be too much out of pocket, just losing a few months of good weather and a fair bit of labour breaking and packing bits... but I'll get over it! Already excited for whatever comes next!

I'm fairly sure there was something on Af1 a couple of years ago about Aprilia telling dealers that they wouldn't warranty valve related engine issue with AR Cans on bikes. Think it was due to lean conditions causing accelerated valve seat wear.

Didn't your bike have one fitted by the previous owner ?

I heard soft valve seats was the problem , a mates son had an early one a had it all done under warranty luckily then sold it on ???? Oh ! Mine passed MOT yesterday no probs even no baffles in ! Pissed off with the f/disc bobbin thing ( every bloody month cleaning ) Armstrong discs looking to be on my shopping list ?

I have read about the short open cans causing valve failures. And yeah mine had a gp1 fitted. It did also have a race ecu (which should fix the lean running) but that was fitted by the previous owner and he only had the bike about 8 months... maybe the damage was already done?

The counter argument to that is the fact that bikes have dropped valves with Akra slip ons, and even std exhausts... all based on threads on af1.

SP2 is high on the list. It's s bucket list bike and so would be a good opportunity to try one... won't be anything like the performance of the v4, or even my old gen 2, but you just don't need huge numbers on the road to have fun

Just read all this and remember the post starting .
What a real bastard!
Even more,how disapointing !
I wanted to buy the V4 Tunono 1100 but chose the Yam MT 10 over it because of the unknown with the valves on the 1100 and valve service tool availability at the time and cost .
Don't get me wrong i love them , but i'm glad i stuck with my choice after reading this, and that's not to say the 1100 suffers the same problem . I'd be like you ,facking beside myself had i chose the V4 and that had happened .

I used to be uncertain , but now i'm not sure anymore

Pretty sweet isn't it Marko, tidy price even with those bits though, there's a 1098R on eBay for less than that, love to hear that Ladybird system though
