Hello all,

My first post - apologies if I have posted in the wrong section.
At 54 years old and having been riding for 35 years, I have sold my GSXR and will embark down the Italian/Aprilia route. Always had japanese bikes, so time to sample something different.

I'm looking for either an early RSV Gen 2 Factory, or a RSV1000R from 2006/7.
I've researched all the common issues with the early Gen 2, but was wondering whats the general opinion on which year/version to go for. I prefer the more updated look of the 2006/7 onwards model, but if a nice early factory came along, I wouldnt dismiss it.
Thanks
Andy

So, went out for the first proper ride today with a mate on his Triumph Tiger.
I now know that the mirrors really are as bad as everyone says...in fact the worse I've ever experienced having had 35 years on Japanese bikes !
There is a plus point in that I now have to do a lifesaver much more than I used to...bad habits had crept in!
Yes, finding neutral really is a pain !!
Who's idea was it to put the indicator switch under the horn button, but having driven in Italy a few times, the horn is used infinitely more than the turn signals,  so perhaps that's why.
Might need to replace the grips with something that absorbs the vibes as started to get a little tingling in my right hand......any recommendations???
Those very minor idiosyncrasies aside, this bike has provided the most enjoyment i've had on two wheels.....I would say ever.
It has soul and character, something I've never really experienced in a Japanese bike.
Its was a shame that the route we took today was clogged with holiday traffic, so only  had  a few opportunities to unleash that V twin....but when I did....what a motor !! Big smile

Regarding the horn/indicators you can do what I did, remove the switch from the bars and pull out the brass dowel, you can then rotate the switch to a more conventional pos.

You soon get used to the odd location though after a few hours if you don't ride else.

Great stuff Andy!

Mirrors I never found too bad other than I have to lift my elbow but then I always had to on other bikes but life savers the key 😉.

Give the clutch a bleed through wouldn’t hurt. It’s got the jet change done but it’s always easier to go from second whilst just rolling to a stop to tap into neutral.

How’s the ride height now? Did you lower the forks or on the to do list?

Hit the nail on the head about character and involvement. I just don’t get it on Japanese bikes in the same way.

Enjoy

Oh and grips

I’ve those two compound renthal ones on the race Kawasaki. Dual compound they called. I don’t pay a huge amount of attention to any vibes during a race but they may be an option. I find I prefer the look of standard grips on the Aprilia and if so you may well find the latest RSV 4 grips may suit? You will have a bit of a job to fit them on the throttle tube as the later bikes are ride by wire but maybe early ones aren’t.
The grips are thicker, at least my Tuono has more padded ones over my V2’s. The V2’s ones were replaced with brand new ones in May and are thinner than the v4’s

Pump the clipons with silicon, great for absorbing vibration or larger bar weights, Oberon do some nice heavy ones.

I have to say, I've never found an issue with vibes on my RSV - Gen 1 mind.

Good point James, I may replace the clutch hose and fittings with Goodridge or HEL stainless (purely cosmetic reasons) so new fluid and a good bleed may help. Regards ride height, you were right, there was only 3 rings showing on the front forks, so its on the to do list.
The only thing I've noticed is that dropping the ride height 30mm has made a huge difference for me, but the bike sits slightly more upright on the side-stand.
I think the vibes I can definitely live with, we were snagged in heavy holiday traffic in the Newquay area, lots of stop/start and filtering, which definitely didn't help.

You may find dropping the forks will give you back the lean you’re after again.

I replaced all the hydraulic hoses on my V2 this year with Hel (cosmetic only also) as I was always needing to bleed it after a tank of fuel even after a new oberan and a Brembo RCS master. I couldn’t find any leaks or weeping but I did end using ptfe tape on all the threads and it’s been trouble free ever since.

Great you’re loving it.

Just check bar end weights and bar end are tight and maybe some new grips as those will be the originals and so a little hard compared to new. Combo of where you were riding and ergonomics will make all sorts of unusual pins and needles after all.

Any upgrades on the horizon or wait for winter?

Welcome along fella if you've bought a bike from James then it will be well sorted that's for sure. Pleased to hear you're loving the big twin they certainly have character and you will feel very rewarded when you get things right on it. Enjoy the torque Big smile

Thanks badapple.......
As for upgrades, stainless brake/clutch lines, I usually replace most of the visible non load bearing fasteners with stainless socket head for cosmetic purposes and maybe a set of AP's rearsets, that will probably be it as it has everything else I was looking for such as the Akrapovics, Airbox mod, etc were already sorted.
Image Works quoted £65 to replace the side panel graphics, so they will be sorted.
Plan for the winter is to get all the panels off, tank etc and do those upgrades.
I did consider getting the downpipes ceramic coated, but at £90 odd plus VAT I'll give than a miss. I did remove the heat wrap from the rear downpipe, (previous owner to James applied white heatwrap to the downpipes) and its all good underneath.

Thanks all.....
Forks now on 4 rings....... Just invested in a low range torque wrench for the axle pinc bolts as my 30 year old Norbar doesn't go down to 12nm!!
One question I do have..... I've got some nice titanium front disc bolts on the way, but regarding the rear disc bolts, will replacing them with stainless cause the speedo to stop working!

Yeah have to use the oem steel ones to keep speedo working

Stainless doesn’t have the magnetic properties
