Hi all Iโm a newbie owner and I have done loads of research and you will be sick of this question but if my bike fires up straight of a jump start does this mean my sprag clutch is ok? Many many thanks ๐

Yep, youโll know if your sprags shot as it sounds like a bag of spanners are spinning round your crank . These bikes like a heavy duty battery to protect the sprag, something around an ytx14 lead or ltx14 or ltx16 lithium.

Our hosts at AP Workshop do a complete package with a stronger battery, HD leads and the HD solenoid. Fitting the leads is easiest if you use the old leads to pull the new leads into position...there are some tight gaps to go through, and the new leads are thicker/stiffer. It's quite complex with earth to the frame then an earth frame to engine. There's a couple of thin wires to join on the + side: you can practice your Western Union splice technique. |

Yes, there are instructions, which are good if you follow them carefully. You need to take some of the bodywork off, which is easy because it's an Aprilia and not a Japanese contraption. The most complicated part is joining the two little red wires, but if you don't want to solder them then you could use bullet connectors or even terminal blocks.
If you need any help, just ask. I've only just started doing servicing and small jobs on my RSV, but it really is a lot less complicated than it looks. Much easier to work on than my KTM 950 Adventure, for instance. You just need a bit of space to put the fairing panels etc safe and out of the way while you work. I got an Abba stand to support the bike, rather than have it on the side-stand.

I think somewhere on this forum there are PDFs of the factory workshop manual and also the Aprilia dealer service manager's course from when the bike was launched. If you cant find them I can email my copies to you if you want.
They are incredibly involving bikes, the more you look at them the better you see they are. For what they cost on the used market now, they are a real bargain.

If you want to do electrical connections these are the business, you just need a heat shrink gun.

Regarding your battery, I keep mine on a optimate 4 and I canโt vouch for this enough, my battery is the original (11yrs old) I learnt this to my cost on my previous S/Triple after the winter lay off every other year needed a new battery , these bikes are so good ๐ enjoy.

Worth watching 'the big ugly project' on this thread
He shows how to sort out 'won't start' issues.
