I guess it had to happen sooner or later. After 10 years of ownership the Gen 1 Tuono has decided to play up.
Warmed her up today no problem, then turned her off and went inside to change into my gear. Come back out and engine turns over but wont fire, ignition off and on then the motor wont even turn over. Listened for pump priming and not sure if it was or not, but I could hear the relay clicking under the rear seat hump. Then she starts up no problem and I take her out, she runs perfectly. Fuel light comes on so I fill her up and go through the same non starting routine at the petrol station, but starts after a couple of attempts. Get her home and the pump primes every time, but sometimes wont fire. Then she fires and dies straight away; she's never done that before. All this is done with side stand up and down, no obvious problem either way. I've let her stand for a bit and then tried her again and she's started up first prod both times. Had a quick look at the wiring diagram, but it's not the easiest to follow. Fuse E covers the ECU, pump relay and engine stop relay, the only component I can fathom that is common to no start or no starter motor. What is the Engine Stop Relay; I thought kill switch but not so sure. I actually cant find the kill switch on the wiring diagram. Any advice gratefully received. |

Switched the ignition on multiple times and pump runs every time.
Disconnected the start relay and pushed the starter swich, pump runs continously, so I think the only problem was the no start on switch push on a couple of occasions. At the moment Im unable to reproduce. I guess no one else has had these symptoms.

Take a look around the headstock, some looms have been known to rub through around there and cause problems, tight Italians don’t leave much spare wiring.

I had two issues a couple of years ago that caused intermittent starting and cutout. Initially I thought they were one and the same cause but they turned out not to be. Have a look at my thread here (And the link to the other issue): http://rsvr.net/topic28622.html and http://rsvr.net/topic27149.html

Thx guys.
Great threads Ray, given me an idea of where to go if I reproduce the fault and which lead onto other good links. Deffo going to do the side stand switch wiring mod that KZMille refers to.

I had a similar fault although mine cut out more when the bars were on the stops. It turned to be a wire pulled off it's solder joint on the bottom of the ignition switch. On stripping the harness I found the wire in question was pulling bowstring tight inside the protective covering,it was all twisted round the other wires at the plug end next to the cylinder and effectively much shorter than all the others. If yours is the same the engine end connector needs de pinning and all the individual wires laid flat in the sleeve then re pinned in the plug. All the individual wires are plenty long enough if they're laid properly and if you orientate then right it makes the harness much more flexible on full lock.

Did the side stand cut out switch mod as per the AF1 forum's suggestion to keep the indication on the dash about a month ago. No repeat of any symptoms, so I guess the switch was on the blink.
