Hello all - I bought a 2004 Factory RSV last year (actual mileage unknown,  of course) and it has a couple issues I *hope* might be related to replacing the ECU...

1st issue, high idle at startup - sometimes up to 3500 rpm, which will clear if I turn off the bike and restart.  Sometimes it will drop to a regular idle, but the EFI warning light then comes on.

2nd issue, sometimes the headlights will get VERY bright at night (also coinciding with and EFI warning light coming on/going off

3rd issue (and this is the most recent)

I replaced the battery last week with a fresh lithium and the RSV loved it, for 7 miles - at which point the dash froze and the bike quit entirely.  There is a definite shirt somewhere, because when I connect positive and negative terminals, the dash backlight turns on, even if there is no key in the ignition.  FWIW, the key does not change anything if inserted.

Issue 4 (from last year) a few times riding without the EFI light on, the bike would begin to die, come back, die again, come back, etc...

I limped it home slowly, it felt like a fuel pump (or like water in the tank).  Just weird.

Anyway, aside from ripping the wiring out and searching for a short somewhere, I'm thinking all these issues might be solved with a replacement ECU.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Mileage?  Maybe 10K?  Maybe more?

I don’t think it’s the ecu but you never know. I suspect the high idle might be the immobilisor ecu. ( it’s known to do that when failing) Does the immobilisor light do anything funny ?

The looms are getting old and crusty by now so might have a rub through. Garin had a cutting out issue from the insulation on the injectors failing. Check the earths etc as well.

As Colin says wiring is old now.
Pop the nose fairing off with the headlamps and look where the loom passes under the air intake through an L shaped support. It vibrates and often runs through the insulation and exposes wires.

Lastly I’d consider by passing the immobiliser anyway and check you stator is charging correctly and that the 2 brown connectors are good. First one by the reg/rec and the second is in the centre of the V under the throttle bodies.

May as well clean out the tank and check/replace fuel filters too

As Spoonz mentioned, i had an odd cutting out issue which kept throwing up an mobiliser error, turned out to be a rub through on the wiring insulation on the coil circuit, was a total pain to find and a complete loom inspection, ended up replacing a few sections that had gone very stiff with age, and re taped the loom, a long Job but worth it, the loom looks a feels like new again

Still have not found the short but the 2 5A fuses - dash/turn and 12V under switch) are smoked, replacing leads to immediate blowing.  I'm now considering the ecu not the primary culprit.  The key with 12V added powers up the fuel pump, and the high-beam lights seem to work under the switch.  No dash, of course, but I'm suspecting the ignition electrics to be the source of the short.
