I've always run my early Gen 1 on 10w40 semi synthetic  as recommended by AP. Having just done an oil change, I saw oil and a filter posted on FB and someone had commented on using 10w40 when Aprilia recommend 15w50. I'm now wondering whether to do another change and use 15w50. The bike has done 27k. Anyone got any views on this please.

I run Motul 7100 15w50 full synth in my Gen 1 Tuono. Put the same in the wifes Monster 696.
I'm sure a semi would be fine, but I stick with Aprilia / Ducati recommended viscosity.
People say I don't know Jack Sh1t; but I do, he lives next door.

Either oil is perfectly ok, I ran 10/40 semi synth for years and only went to 15/50 as I got a load of it for free.

Doesn't make much odds I don't think. From memory the first number is the actual weight, with the number after the w being the fake weight it can act like due to the additives. The additives break down with time so that second number will reduce the older the oil gets. 

Think the reason we have a low real viscosity (number before the w) is to let the oil be thin enough to lubricate on a cold start. Then when up to temperature the additive enhanced viscosity (number after the w) is what protects the engine.  

Really we want the operating weight to match what the manufacturer say. For the engine Aprilia says we want 50. But if we're going to run the bike through a UK winter we also want that thinner 10 weight for when we first start the bike up on a cold day. 

You don't really get 10w50 oil so in the UK people recommend 10w40 as it lets you use the bike year round without worry of damaging the engine on a frosty morning.  I use 15w50 because I never use the bike in very cold conditions and figure I'd rather have the extra protection in summer. Though I'm really not sure how much difference there's going to be between 40 and 50 in terms of engine protection. As it is you could probably run these engines on golden syrup and they'd probably still do more miles than most of us will do in a lifetime. Who know ha 🤷‍♂️

Both numbers represent an oil's viscosity, but in different conditions and measured in different ways.

The number before the W (ie 10W) is the oil's resistance to cold cranking at Winter (hence W) temperatures. The lower the number, the easier the engine will start. Once the oil is warm, it's irrelevant. If you are using your bike in very cold weather a 10W-40 will be better than a 15W-50, as the engine will start easier and oil will pump up to the cams quicker.

The other number is measured in a different way (flow rate rather than resistance to cranking) with the oil at working temperature. A high number is good because it represents a high film strength at high temperatures and pressures, but bad because it represents energy-sapping pumping and churning losses and won't flow so fast. 

Synthetic base oils and modern additives give increased film strength at lower viscosities than old-school mineral oils. Hence my old Ford Escort Mk I ran on mineral 20W-50, but my Focus runs on synthetic 5W-30 and the engine will last about 10 times longer while only needing an oil change once a year.

For our Aprilias the most important thing is that the oil has the correct approvals...especially the JASO one. I've used Silkolene and Motul in mine with no problems.

Go on youtube and watch the apworkshop vid on oils ,i always though w was for weight ie thickness but its not its for winter and comes from the whale oil its very informative and 10w40 is spot on for uk 
its twins for me !!!!

i run both my bikes gen 2 tuono factory and rsv mille r on 10/40 semi. i no ill get slated for this but the oil i use is smith and allen exceeds all specifcations and cheap as chips i buy 20ltrs at a time used it for the past 15yrs in all my bikes never had a problem
