I've never heard of this happening on Apes? It's a BIG problem on Suzuki's SV1000/ and later V twins though,they pretty much shed their magnets regularly.

i thought a dodgy regulator messes with the stator not the other way round

On Suzooks (and probably others) it's the magnets coming unglued from the flywheel rather than the over powered stators that we suffered from Same end results and expense,just different causes

As I say, I know nothing of it, just thought it might help someone.
When the reg/rec went on my KTM about the only electrical component to survive was the alternator. The battery looked very over-inflated and was making a noise like a boiling kettle.
