So, on the way to work today my 2001 Gen1 cut out during a gear change. It had done this two or three times before and I have always put it down to knocking the fast idle off too early before the engine has warmed up enough as it always runs sweet afterwards.

However today - and this may or may not be the same issue - not only did it cut out but once re-started the clocks have re-set to Km and the rev shift light had also re-set to it's default setting which has never happened on any of the previous occasions. Bike restarted immediately and ran sweet the rest of the day, about 90 miles in total.

The re-setting of the dash suggests a total loss of power so maybe a live feed loss or earthing issue somewhere. I also wondered - as it happened as I changed gear, and pulled the clutch in - as with each of the other instances - whether the clutch switch/wiring might be the culprit

I've just got back in so haven't had a look yet but wondered if anyone had come across this before or had any ideas?

Cutting out could indeed be the microswitch on the clutch (I had this issue) or the sidestand switch (had this too).

As for reset that would suggest battery is not in a healthy state , do you have a multimeter that you can do some check swith ?

If your clocks reset after you restarted it because it had cut out this could be the sh*t standard cable connector going  to the starter motor, this gets overlooked because it is covered up by fairing. I had my tuono a few years and had done the usual ,better battery better starter solenoid etc, just as I am of the mindset "prevention is better than cure". However I would still get the odd dash reset when starting, then one day I checked the connector going  onto the starter, sweet Jesus I don't know how the bike was even starting, it had corroded  away and was a very light looking connector anyway. I just took the cable off and got a decent connector soldered on at the local bike shop, no more clock resets.  I have since fit a set of Johnboys cables.

For bypassing the side stand switch,  look at the below post from another forum and go to post #10, it can be done and still keep the amber waring light on the dash.

Thanks for replying Kiwi,

As it has only ever happened when changing gear I think that would point to the clutch microswitch rather than sidestand so will look at that first.

Yep, I've got a multimeter so will check that although I'm confident the battery is good as it starts on the button every time. But, famous last words and all that! Just odd that both happened at the same time.

For reference I restarted the bike while rolling within a few seconds of it cutting out.

I have Johnboys cables (They do make a noticeable difference), uprated Aprilia solenoid (From Griff), uprated high capacity, high CCA battery. I guess I should check all connections for these cables.

Although the bike started great from cold (The most work for the battery) as it wasn't that long after the initial start when it cut out, the battery may not have had a sufficient re-charge from the bike causing it to be marginal to start again - although again it did re-start immediately without any difficulty.

The more I think about it - and suggested by comments so far - there may indeed be two separate issues here, the first the cutting out and the second the re-set. Separate issues but the first highlighting the second.

Thanks again.

So, Does anyone know if the clutch microswitch cuts the ignition or just the starter? Looking at the wiring diagram of course everything goes back to the ECU. My thinking is that if it only cuts the starter then the fault cannot lie there.

I just thought I would revive this and link to what I think is the solution to the problem I was having. The issue became more frequent and eventually I couldn't trust it after cutting out whilst leaned over at about 70!

I'm pretty sure this was the start of my ignition switch going AWOL and the solution found here:

I've also renamed this thread to make it more helpful when people carry out searches in the future.
