Guys
am i right in thinking 15T front - 42T rear is optimal configuration for my 2007 Tuono 1000 R (no need to change chain) ? |

Or use this http://https://www.gearingcommander.com you can work out exactly what speed you want in each gear.
I used to ahem 16/44 on my Tuono. Just did a trackday on my Mille and the gearing was an absolute shambles with a 17/46 using GC I need a 15/43.

Was that snett mate? I'd of come and said hi how was it?. Ive never heard of anyone running that gearing before. Im on 15/42 which i found to be spot on at snetterton 2 and 3rd for most of the bends with the shift light flashing in top just before braking on the straight. Gen2 though

I have 15/43 on my gen1 tuono, always used to use 16/44 but prefer 15/43.

If all you are doing is swapping your 17t front for a 15t, the chain you have is fine. It'll just push the rear wheel back a couple of notches. I just did this to my Mille and although I can't say about track (was meant to test it at Cadwell on Wednesday but the day was cancelled due to fog), it's definitely much better at slow speeds (on the road). Much less feathering of clutch in 20/30 zones and smoother throttle and gear changes. It's not as crazy a difference as people make out (still <115hp) but it feels like it should have left the factory with a 15 front.

If your chain is starting to shows signs of wear, it's recommended to change it if fitting new sprockets, as the pitch will alter slightly as it wears.

The video below took my understanding of chain wear from none to some. Also makes a good case for changing the front sprocket midway through the lifetime of the chain and rear sprocket. The wear of the rollers rather than stretching of the chain makes sense too. |

Of course that depends what your sprockets are made from. If you have a steel front and an aluminium rear then they will probably wear at a more equal rate.
