    Posted: 19 Oct 2017 at 21:14
Hi peeps,

Finally found the cause of my running problems (hopefully), dodgy fuel pump.

I have taken the faulty one out and have a replacement, question is do I use a sealant such as hylomar blue when fitting it or am I OK to just rely on the O ring on the fuel pump base? Sorry if this is obvious to some but I'm learning as I go along.

😊😊

If your tank hasn't distorted then the o ring should be ok.

I had mine out a few years ago to replace the fuel filter and never used any separate sealer, just relied on the o-ring, never leaked.

Only if it's distorted through ethanol.

It doesn't seem distorted.   Sorry if I sound dumb here, but distorted through ethanol?   Is this a by product of petrol?

causes the tanks to swell and get mis-shaped

I'd go belts and braces and use some sealer just in case on a plastic tank....do not over tighten ...torque down in the correct sequence as per the workshop manual

I've read it's the water that's absorbed in the ethanol that causes the bubbling and swelling.
If you leave the tank empty with the pump removed the water eventually evaporates and the tank returns to normal shape..ish. I'm giving this a try over winter as I want to check my pump out and my front bolts are a bit tight.

Not a fan of sealant here personally. If it's distorted where the pump is, you may need to use a heat gun and straighten it out manually by hand, checking against a straight edge.

As Steve says, an open tank, left in an airy warm place will dry out over time, but we are talking months, not weeks, not a process that can be hurried, but the best thing you can do if it's swollen. I drain mine down over winter and leave the cap open, but an airing cupboard would probably be better.

The best way of refitting a swollen tank, is to put the front bolts in first loose, then push the rear 4 bolt mount into position and tighten everything up.
Question everything.

Has anyone tried hanging one of those de-humidifier bags (Available from Aldi and elsewhere) down inside an empty tank over the winter? Doing this with the cap closed would prevent moisture from the air in the garage overwhelming it. Just a thought.

That's a very good idea on a tank with the pump out, will give it a go myself.

BP Ultimate unleaded is ethanol free in my area. You need to check that it is for your area though, as they do add it in a few places in the UK. I don't want to start another dreaded ethanol petrol debate!! But after I dried my tank out, it's been good with this. That being said, I'm keeping an eye out for a mint tank to keep for the future, along with a few other bits that I think will become a bit harder to find in a few years. Oh for a carbon tank.... sorry day dreaming for a mo there

Question everything.

Thanks for the advice guys.... I checked there was no distortion before fitting the pump, and there wasn't any. I used Hylomar Blue as a sealant and then tightened the pump bolts in the correct manor.   The high pressure fuel line was a butch to get back on though gggrrr, but I managed it eventually.   At first there seemed to be a leak from the banjo bolt.   I tightened it up and all seems good now. Leaving a small amount of fuel in it over night before bolting the tank down.   I will check again in the morning for any leaks.   Hopefully all is OK.   I'll post results of my test ride here 👍👍👍👍

I've had to take the pump off my gen2 and it is a pain until you do it a few times then it all goes back without any dramas.I also used hymolar sealant just to be sure as my tank was a bastard to put back on the first time so didn't want to do it again in a hurry been using esso super since I bought it and it has definitely helped.
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left
