I've always fancied one of these, so have decided to buy one to keep the Mille company in the garage!
I'm looking at the mk2 version(at least I will know how to use the dashboard ). Anything I should look out for in particular on these? Are the engines pretty reliable? Any info appreciated. |

As reliable as any 2 stroke. Budget in a top end rebuild unless the seller has receipts of it being done recently. Take your time to find a good clean one as pretty much every RS250 in existance has been on track at some point and very few came away unscathed. Brilliant little bikes that are hilarious fun and handling that will put you off the Mille. Wish I was in your position as would love one. A mate had one for years that was treated like a baby. I stupidly passed up on it back in the days when you could buy one cheap.
Stick some Tyga side by side pipes, Putoline Estertech oil and go revel in the noise and smell. Sigh. Anyone want an 03 R so I can go hunt one too? |

Aprilia Performance are selling one (number at top of the page) They were considering making it a custom special if it didn't sell but I believe it's a sorted bike so give them a ring.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies!
I very nearly bought one of these a couple of years after they first came out, but decided on a GSXR400RRSP instead - a move that I don't regret, but also do! Griff, I will be completely honest, I'm not 100% sure if I like the look of the Chesterfield replica - I'm a minimalistic kind of guy - I have always(to the bemusement of friends)de-badged my top of the range vehicles, as I fell I have nothing to prove. I was really after a mk2, but however if the 'right' mk1 version came along, then I think I would be happy to take one! Confused at he moment, as I'm also looking at an RGV250. I have never owned a 2-stroke bike, but just feel the urge to have one before its too late!

Yes excellent bike in lovely condition by the picture. Good arrow Nicky. Arrow pipes are a great choice should you go down that route along with Jolly Moto and Lomas. Far superior than Tyga and Nikon. They make the RS/RGV peakier still . Step 1. Join Sean Hadleys RGV250.co.uk. Every thing on your bike is on there. Power valve cables that come standard with your 250.The nipples fall off. They are a brass colour ,but probably have been changed for the far better Suzuki RGV items. There are some wild power claims for the RS. I have heard people claiming 80+ BHP. Rubbish. 50-57 for a really good engine on a good day. Cougar Red Power valves are essential for total piece of mind no matter what else you do . The role pin ( seriously ) falls out and the assembly falls in the engine sometimes smashing the port bridge on the exhaust in some cases. Don't let chancers touch it. Isn't Graham File down your way and Bob Farnham ? Well worth a visit or a call to either of them two . Great choice , a great bike and glad to see you have bought a nice specimen. |

Thanks for all the info, much appreciated.
At the moment its just going to stay standard, but once its run in I may stick a set of pipes on it - do you know if they make it much louder? It seems a bit quiet as it is and I wouldn't mind a bit more noise! Not heard of Graham File, I will do a Google search. Cheers!

Run in? Is this a brand new bike that was advertised that was still in the crate by any chance ?
Arrows sound lovely ,very crisp and good value for money.Much louder but not offensive
Jolly Moto are the best especially with Zeltronic adjustable ignition. Will rev so free you wont believe its the same bike.Lovely banshee scream ,extra revs. With any of the systems ,there is a significant weight saving.Time on the Dyno absolutely essential with that motor after fitting pipes because you will put a filter on too. Up to you but rather than go to pipes first, get the power valves sorted. They make a difference to power delivery.Increase reliability. I can't remember the combination now ,but you can mix RGV L & M model valves to do it for a less amount of cash, but you don't get rid of the very slight play in the shaft and pulleys. There are plenty of manuals around and you can download from the RS250 section of RGV250.co.uk. I had an RGV 250 M with a Stan Stephens ceramic big bore kit to take it to 300cc. New modified rods , crank. Just shy of 67 BHP with Arrows,Couger red Power valves and heads, mild road tune,B+M filter , modified air box. Also with the little stupid mesh carb filters removed too. Electronics gives you that snap in acceleration though and i wish i had put the SS modified heads on and bought the Zeltronic ignition with the spare cash.Takes the load off the gen side crank web too. With that on i would have seen a 70 BHP reliable motor running castrol fully synthetic . As i said before, start with the power valves as once you start spending with these thing's , you just can't stop, but they have to be right. By the way,the GP forks on your bike are way ahead of anything Suzuki fitted to the M onwards. |

No, it wasn't the brand new one advertised. Its a one owner from new with 749 miles on it, so almost as good as a brand new one!
I have been reading and seen mixed reviews about the Arrows. Also looking at the Tyga stuff and thinking about their powervalves: I wont rush into anything yet as I just want to enjoy it once it warms up a bit! Thanks for all the info, its much appreciated. |

Graham File is based in Dover, well respected in my arena but you have to have big pockets, only the rich use him.
Bob Farnham doesn't do 2T stuff anymore, he can be persuaded but he's in semi retirement now. Stan Stephens I would never recommend for anything, PM me if you want to know why. With regards to your pipes remember that they are an integral part of the engine on a 2T, just sticking some race pipes on wont necessarily increase performance and in some cases make it worse because they don't match the tune on the barrels. As for the noise, my Jolly Moto race pipes make 99-100db on the MSV noise testing. That's with Jolly Moto aluminium cans. They are not loud. The end can and stinger length affect the power delivery. The loud 2T's you hear are TZ's and T20's with straight through pipes. Unless your gonna tune it I would keep it stock and change the parts that can fail as already described and just enjoy it. It's made for the road not screaming around a racetrack. I would hate my TZR on the road as it's totally focused on track. Just my 2p's worth |

I agree . As for the pipes, your lucky if road expansions bang anything more than a couple of BHP.Weight is the biggest advantage, and the looks, that's why i would only use them in conjunction with something else |
