Hi guys just wondering if there are any taller guys who ride an early Gen 1 with a metal tank? Reason why is I am 6'5 and my legs don't fit the plastic tank and comfort is a bit of an issue, my thighs clamp onto the top Edge of the under cut for your legs and doesn't provide much grip. So was wondering if the metal tank would be a better fit. I've never sat on earlier bike with a metal tank so can't say fit sure. From the pictures I've seen it look like there maybe a little more room or at least a little more comfortable anyway
My thinking would be do a tank swop on the Haga or get an earlier R with a metal tank |

I'm wanting the AP rearsets but can't financially stretch that far at the mo. But not totally convinced I'm gonna get enough of a drop either when they are fitting. My pins are just too long and lanky

You might be surprised as it's not just the drop but also that the peg is placed further back. This has the effect of dropping your knees down a bit as you reach back to them. Anyone local to you who has them who you could visit? Try before you buy as it were.
Also, raising your seat could help a bit....and at 6ft 5 it's not like you'll struggle to reach the ground. You need to add a bit of foam and re-cover. If there is nowhere bike specific local, a furniture upholsterer will be able to sort you out.

Take a look at some backing plates for your original rearsets to move them if no one does them they would be cheap to have made.

I used to, at 6'3" it was better than the resin tank, and the '04 on is also better despite still having a resin tank. I still have both, the gen 1 is 'ok' and I can see how moving pegs would help.

I had the same issue as you on my 01, my legs were locked to the underside of the cutout, that was ok sometimes but a little tiring as just couldn't move. I mounted the AP rearsets upside down and got a 40mm drop on the pegs. |

Cheers guys, seem the AP rearsets may drop enough. Will have to scrape together the penny's to get them and hopefully they will do. Got a feeling ageing may have a little to do with my discomfort too

Aftermarket rearsets (or relocation plates) and a set of Stompgrips :)

Definitely the rearsets and a must for stomp grips, but at the moment the stomp grips would be no use Also looking at lower pegs like a few guys have suggested, they seem to be around £70/£100 depending on make. But if I'm gonna spend that on pegs j may as well hold out for the rearsets. |

Seeing as we're (kind of) talking about petrol tanks, are the early metal ones interchangable with the later plastic ones?
Reason being I have a gen 1 03 R mille and fancy an ally tank because of the ethanol in fuel |

Those look like a plan , been thinking about getting a second hand set of rearsets of eBay then getting new mounting plates made to fit the RSV. Are they expensive to get made up? |

Along with the slight cramped position I find myself in I'm also in the same thinking as you. Had tank off during winter and was a bitch to get back on . From what I've read and been informed by guys on here it can be done but cosmetically won't be great. I'm afraid I'm not a 100% sure how to do it though |

the metal tank has a different bottom on the side near the seat as the side panels cover it
like rsv_ecosse's bike here
obviously standard 01-02 bike
and a standard metal tanked bike showing the early panels on the tank

Depends on who you know or where you work I knocked them up at work back in the days when we had time for things like that, sadly those days are long gone and not coming back anytime soon. Those are Sv1000s fitting and are the wrong hole spacing for our bikes unfortunately. As a project they are easy enough,if you have some time,a Cad-Cam suite and a CNC machining centre to make them on. All you need to start is measure the hole pitch for the mountings and then draw in some duplicate holes spaced wherever you think they'd be useful, when you have enough holes just draw a pleasing shape round the holes and then throw it at a CNC mill. A few years back I used to have a CadCam suite on this laptop but got fed up with trying to keep the crack up to date so I wiped it, otherwise I could have drawn something up that might have interested a wider audience. It's too hectic at work these days for doing foreigners though. |

Regarding tanks and seats,I've just fitted an early gen1 seat to my 2002 plastic tank bike and although it does fit it doesn't fit very well and has a slight gap around the tank.
I just wanted a seat to modify without chopping my decent one up and the project was successful in as much as I now have better location without keep bashing my nuts into the tank under braking and it's easier to touch both feet down now. It's not the prettiest sculpted seat out there mind, but then neither is the ar*e that sits on it |
