Need some advice on brake disc rebuilding. I get my Brembo oro carriers back on Wednesday from getting them anodised in gold. I've got Brembo racing bobbins, mainly because I couldn't find anyone to re-rivit them back together so got the race bobbins that have a circlip to hold the bobbins on so I can do it myself.
I kept the old spring washers from the discs when I drilled out the original riveted bobbins. Would it be better for me to put the discs together and leave out the original spring washers and have full floating discs or put the spring washers back on and have semi floating discs. Anyone running or has run full floating discs? Any advice mucho appreciated. Cheers

I run fully floating but they are braketech and a different design , personally I wouldn't risk leaving the washers off of discs that were not originally designed or supplied as fully floating.

Lots of people bend the petals back on semi floating disc's for more side clearance, but you still have the thickness of the flat washer,I wouldn't fancy leaving them out either.

I have the Brembo race bobbins and I have .5mm and .2mm shims to go with the bobbins and e-clips. The bobbins and e-clips are the same size as the original press on bobbins so I won't be missing any thickness because the spring washers won't be on there as I can put he .2mm shim in there instead.
Just wondering if it was worth leaving the spring washers out and running full floaters or putting the spring washers back on and have quieter running brakes. I don't think the noise would bother me really but wondering if there is better braking performance worth bothering with running fully floating discs. I supposed I could always just try them and if I don't like them I could then put the springs in. Just not sure.

Trust me you won't hear any noise from them when riding, mine rattle like a bastard when pushing it around but I can't hear a thing when riding or if you can ride faster to take your mind off it😊

I'm picking up the centre carriers tomorrow. I spoke to bike torque the other day for some advice, where I bought the bobbins from and they want me to take the discs in to them for them to have a look at just to make sure everything is fine before I put them together since no one has done this to Oro discs before.
I have read a lot of posts where people have converted discs to full floaters by using racing bobbins. I would prefer press on bobbins to be fair but can't find anyone who can do it or where to get them from. Can't even get any support from Brembo In a way I am kind of regretting not buying narrow track original discs and buying the Oro discs now. The Oro discs are 1/2lb heavier than the narrow track originals. 1lb heavier for both discs. Its all performance in steering when going fast, over better braking with the thicker discs. To be fair I didn't notice any braking performance problems with the original discs, they were lighter and they came in gold carriers. But no doubt the Oro's will look mint with gold centres though. Right pain in the arse just to have gold centres. If I knew what I currently know now I would have got the narrow trace discs. I kind of got talked in to them as they are an upgrade. But that said until I try the Oro discs and get a bit of trust in the bobbins I will no doubt change my mind. |

Cheers for the help and advice guys. I had the bike out yesterday and thought I'd give a bit of my own personal feedback on full floating discs.
Aside the oro discs and I could have just bought HPK discs. This was because where I got the oro discs from the guy who sold them to me got the price of them wrong. In the book it said £440 for HPK discs but they are sold as a pair so I ended up with the oro's as I thought HPK discs were £440 each. When they are not. If I was to do this again I would get HPK as I am interested in the performance over the oro quieter running having now tried full floating discs. Having now tried the oro fully floating there is a definite difference. There is less spring, or sponginess on the lever. Well I can notice it any ways. For me now if I have got the option I would rather fit full floating over floating discs now having tried them. There is definitely better feel. Well there is on my bike any road so if you are a bit of a perfectionist and notice things like this, or you have a track bike I would run full floating having now tried them. But thats just me. The noise doesn't bother me what so ever and I don't find it a problem at all. I found a guy in South Wales that can re-rivet discs back together (£3 a bobbin) as I was going to put stainless steel rivets back in with Brembo springs. He advised me not to waste my money and use the Brembo racing bobbins but put some epoxy resin on the e-clip to stop them spinning around on the bobbin. I also took the discs to Bike Torque to their brake tech to have a look at to make sure they were safe. I could shim them a bit tighter if I wanted to but he said they are perfectly safe with the side ways movement they currently have. What I was surprised was how much backwards and forwards travel there is on oro discs and all discs for that matter. You just don't notice it because of the springs. The Brembo racing bobbins are the exact same size as the original riveted steel bobbins, so the movement is how they are made. So all I need to worry about is the side ways movement. I've got quite a lot really, on par or possibly .2mm more than HPK. But the feed back I am getting at the lever is much better and I notice the difference. I wish that I had got the HPK discs as I think the disc carrier looks better and it already comes in gold. But these are my full floating oro discs with gold centres I put epoxy resin/glue on both sides of the e-clip ends. Its just to stop the e-clips from spinning round on the bobbins and causing wear to the bobbin. Apart from the look of the carrier compared to HPK, although they don't look that bad, I am well happy with the way they perform compared to before. Thanks for help and advice guys |
