Took the bike from winter storage (a warm garage)...

'Err' is flashing on the dash - no other warning lights. The bike starts and runs fine.

Where to start digging the problem ?

User manual only describes "If ERR flashes on the dash instead of water temp reading and the stand and red line leds turn on, then there is a communications problem on the can line..."

As said, only ERR blinking and no stand/red line leds illuminated.

Yes Can bus isn’t communicating to the ECU

Must have a damaged wire perhaps. It’s worth looking at the loom under the air intake as whilst they are wrapped in that cloth stuff it still vibrates and wears through. Also the connectors around the left side by the immobiliser and in particular the block connectors. Clean them out regardless and fresh dielectric grease whilst there.
I’d also remove and check your side stand switch as they often split where it rotates so often and it must be near 15 years old by now.

If that doesn’t solve it then it’s AP for you my friend

Only the dash and ecu form part of the CAN so it’s going to be a problem between the 2 communication wise.  I would start with the dash and ecu connections first.

The only things happening between last autumn and this spring were removing and reinstalling the battery.

I guess the culprit should be in that area?

Maybe. A case of having a look and see. The dash and ecu has multiple power feeds so check the wiring around the 2 x 30 amp fuses next to the batt and wiring around the batt , as well as the ecu and dash connections if you can’t see anything else.

Since the issue appeared after installing the battery, I chose to check that area first.

Removed the rear fairings and battery, but could not detect anything obvious. Then did some wire wiggling and tried to press the leads deeper into their connectors. The only thing found was that one of the 30A fuses was a bit loose. But then again, if 30 amps were missing, you'd expect to have other symptoms as well.

Anyway, the 'err' is now gone and coolant temp is showing. Mission accomplished?
