    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 at 16:20
So I was riding along a couple days ago with a pillion, went over a small pothole about 15/20mph and I felt the rear of the bike drop. At first I thought I had blown a tyre but when the bike ground to a halt about 4 yards down the road, I saw that the dogbone had snapped. I had planned to check it over around 20,000 miles, bike is currently on just over 19,000.
To make things worse the recovery company were bringing the bike back to my house and when I got out the cab, the bike was laying on its side on the bed of the lorry. Bent clip on, snapped clutch lever, dented silencer and 1 chipped/deeply scratched panels.

I know I probably should have checked the dogbone sooner, could have happened at a much worse time.

Below is also a photo of an old pin and bearings that were replaced on the old bike.

On a gen1 it’s lack of maintenance . The bearings need re greasing yearly if used through wet winters or jet washes. The seals are crap at keeping water out

On a gen2 the side plates can on rare occasions fail as well as they are thinner and weaker than a gen1 design.  Check the bearings and the side plates for deep scores where the dog bone has eaten into it.  Or fit upgraded side plates.

See my post from end August I think it was. Mine did the same and bent shock although we think shock was donalded before and that caused it. Mine went at 50mph after hitting pothole, luckily it was in straight line and nobody behind. Luckily I had a good recovery driver and bike stayed upright all way home. Mine had just been serviced too
born ugly what's your excuse!!

I know the  AP shop has just been restocked with dogbone bearings get calling

Laziness could be the death of you , strip and regrease  at the very least or better still strip and fit new bearings along with spookys washers for peace of mnd

Yep had the side plates and dog bone replaced by Aprilia at 2000 Miles as the dog bone had eaten its way into the side plates, since replaced with a nice set of Ti Side plates, done 40000 on the replacement dog bone and bearings which still look like new as they are stripped, cleaned and re greased every 12 months !

I use a waterproof grease from bel ray.  Meant for Mx bikes that live in mud but it helps keep the water out

They have just put on honey based dressings. Handy for healing but dogs keep sniffing my leg.

Did the recovery company pay for any damages , I had a bike set fire to itself in spectacular fashion yrs ago and the recovery company said they would drop it back next day, bike went missing in their possession and asked how much it's worth,  i said  a grand and got a cheque 2 days later, it was only really worth half that

Actually the Prolan is no joke, it is used in offshore as well, even underwater, so there is no better for, salt/water. Roaddirt and protection.
We use those alot on heavy equipment, in our snow-removal department, at KEF-International airport.

Read a little about it...Wink

I've agreed a price with the driver. If it went through any form of insurance  through the recovery company then it would be written off.

That raises an interesting point. Given that you would be claiming on their liability insurance rather than a vehicle insurance as such, would they have the right / authority to write it off? I don't know but would think not, anyone know for sure?
