That was the sort of thing I first thought of but I've seen 2 trailers of that generic type dump their bikes on the road so that and the price put me off. I have a couple of mates who both have an ERDE 3 bike trailer sitting around doing nothing much so I borrow one of them as needed. One of these guys has since moved on to a front wheel only device that rolls the bike along behind the car on it's back wheel, which he rates very highly, and that breaks down into a suitcase size. |

Ian, there may be different types but I've heard that those can sometimes damage frame /forks due to pivot action through the bike. I don't know any more than that and haven't ever looked at them properly to see how the forces may be transmitted. It may be bull but thought it worth mentioning. |

So I believe,I think they'd be ok for rescuing a breakdown but I wouldn't fancy dragging a sportsbike on track tyres around like that. My mate seems to like his though,so much so that his trailer just sits in his garden unused My preferred option would be to get rid of a car and just buy a van instead if was thinking about getting active on trackdays again, but as I have a towbar and two helpful mates who loan their trailers I've gone with the cheapest option whenever I've done a solo trackday in the past. I don't like the idea though just in case something happens on track and I can't drive afterwards,it's not happened yet but I don't like to tempt fate too often |

Weeeeelll, Coppice happened when I got a bit too enthusiastic at Donnington,I was unscathed but the bike was a bit second hand after barrel rolling several times. I wouldn't bother trying to take it sans brakes and just bleeding speed off with engine braking before pulling through it,not on road based tyres anyway I'm on the fence about about the bash there this year,I'm really tempted but I've not been on track for years now and it's the time of the year we normally go on holiday so I don't want to risk anything disrupting that. AND, I've seen what can happen when one starts having too much fun

No,both of them are not short of garden space and reckon they're worth more sitting around getting used once in a blue moon, luckily for me. |

Second hand prices seem pretty high anyway mate. I've been doing a lot of research and unless something really decent comes up in the next few weeks I'm buying a new one like what dog posted on the first page. 450quid all in.

Yeah, decent ones really seem to hold their price. Some of the cheapo's,well I think you pretty much get what you pay for and I've seen a few of those collapsible ones sort of err, collapsed by the roadside with track bikes thrown off so I'm a bit wary. I quite fancied designing my own when I first got my towbar fitted but after talking to the specialists and realising there was type approval and insurance liabilities involved I backed off pretty quickly, probably why you sometimes see cheap, home made ones for sale. They actually had a racer phone them en route to Anglesey with a big name collapsible trailer that had collapsed by itself in the road and they went and rescued him and hired him their demo models for the day/weekend. Apparently he was that impressed he bought it from them afterwards but on checking online they don't list any bike specific trailers now,I know they weren't particularly happy with the concept at the time and only made them to order so perhaps there wasn't enough demand ? Since vanning for the last few years I've grown to appreciate the benefits and use of use although I'm not above taking the cheap option and borrowing a mate's if I have to cost wise. Another problem of towing is security should you want to check into a motel the night before,at least a van keeps things out of sight also I find reversing a van so much easier But at the end of the day £450 is a lot easier to stomach than silly money for a decent van,I guess as long as you keep an eye on all the fastenings etc is case they're getting loose or cracking then all should be good.

Type approval for trailers is a relatively recent phenomenon - - another EU law albeit a one that has some merit - and any trailer that pre-dates the requirement, even home made is still legal. Of course it must be roadworthy so avoid some of the less well thought out examples. So Ian, if you made your trailer some time ago () you would have no issues. Many years ago I built my own box trailer by fitting a frame to an old caravan chassis and cladding it in Ali.

Sam the advantages of the £450 trailer is that you can put spares in and fuel in it, i am going to put a floor on mine and some way of storing fuel on it. If i can keep it so it still folds it would be great , but it's not to much of a problem where it's at my sister's place. I will probably take the wheels of it and put it at the back of the garden. As long it still goes to the floor for loading after modifying it. It's a safety latch, if the air should leak out it will still remain up which is reassuring.

If I stick at it this year I'll change the car for a van that I can use as a daily next year.
At the moment I'm just getting started so I've managed to pick up a Honda Genny for £130 in good nick. I managed to get hold of this trailer (picking it up Saturday) for £250, it's got a 3rd track so can take 3 bikes but I'll very rarely put two on so I'll make a little platform to secure the generator to it, and my pal is making a box for me to oup the Jerry can in so I don't have to deal with the fumes in the car. Just need a set of spare wheels for wets and some track fairings. |
