Hello, My name is Aaron and have owned my first rsv mille 2001 since the beginning of spring. Ive fitted the ap workshops battery, cables and solenoid so it starts on the button and have put 1500miles on it hooning around the vale of belvoir . Cant fault the bike except the engine vibrations.I know its a v twin and some vibration is normal but I feel mine is excessive. Tick over to 3k the engine is smooth but over that vibrates like a good un. Can feel it in the seat, bars and foot pegs. Wouldnt say it feels like its going to explode just vibrates more then anything ive ridden. Its also LOUD I mean mechanically loud. Its got the fr100 chip in and came with a cheap end can which was offensively loud so I put the factory one on but its still loud. I dont know anyone with an aprilia so I could see if theres is the same. Just am after some thoughts and if I have a problem, cheers

Welcome to the Apehouse Aaron  Handshake

Things like vibration are subjective depending on what you're used to I suppose but it seems yours could be excessive ,hopefully someone near you may be able to help.

Failing that I can say your best bet bet is a visit to AP workshops ( details top of the page) for Griff to have a look at it.

No direct experience of this, but it might be an idea to slacken off the engine-mountings, then retorque to whatever it says in the manual.

Read in the factory manual engine bolts need to be done up in a certain order , whys that ?  Its got 31k on the clocks so assuming its had a sprag could the flywheel been put back on cock eyed causing the vibration ? Gonna get the rear cam cover off and check the balance shaft is timed correct.

Dave Moss did a very revealing video on his track bike after an on track accident using a cnc checking rig.

It seems even a small off can put really large distortions and twists in the frame that miraculously go away once the engine bolts are relaxed and then torqued up again in the correct sequence.

I'll try and find it in a minute

Here it is,although this is crash related damage it does show what can happen to a frame.

Actually it's a really good display of a portable CMM in use,I'm more used to the large, dedicated inspection types but the principals remain the same, even the infra red non contact types.

The difference in chain tension after loosening all the bolts and re torquing is amazing

Since the bodyworks off for painting and I dont ride in winter I cant run the engine till spring so Ill call this my winter project.
I undid and retorqued the engine bolts as per the factory manual, so that might of solved it. Ive taken the rear cam cover off and checked the timing and it all lines up. The valves are .12 and .22 so just in spec so im going to leave them and just assume the fronts are the same. Will probably be next winter project .
While pulling the plugs to help getting the engine in TDC the inner plug cap has left the metal clip on the spark plug so will need a new cap. Could this be contributing to the vibration if the rears only firing on one plug ?
Tempted to pull the flywheel off and thoroughly clean the taper and reseat it hoping its been off and not seated true causing the excessive vibration ? Is this likely and how hard is it and how to torque it back on. No way am I going to rely on the crank locking tool ive made. Would some kind of strap ( oil filter )round the flywheel work?
Thanks for your thoughts

That idea of immobilizing the flywheel smacks of genius to me Clap

I know all about the 8mm bolt locating in a groove but that taking all the torque involved seems wrong to my mind as a life long precision engineer.

Just a catch up so not to leave the post unfinished.
Over winter ive retorqued the engine bolts in the order in the manual. Adjusted 6 out of 8 valve clearances so theyre all well within spec. Its a really nice engine to work on and wasnt as hard as it looked plus saved myself afew quid. Used the shims off a HD vrod from wemoto alot less than aprilia shims.
Took off the original exhaust can I refitted and got an Akrapovic end can 53mm and got a mate to weld up a link pipe. Not ideal but a damn sight lighter the the original . Still bloody loud definitely need ear plugs, got a cheapo db killer coming so will try that.
First few rides are promising.  The vibration is less and the engine has lost its thump thump and is now more refined if that makes sence. No more sledge hammer and now more toffee hammer.
Im thinking it might be the engine is breathing better with the Akro as ive got the fr100 chip fitted by the PO. ?
Going to get it over the AP Workshops and get it tuned up to see if the helps also.
Cheers
