Damn……
It’s happened. Just done a check on my stator output voltages. Only getting 9v ac between 1 and 2. The others are 68v and 58v. Did the same check this time last year and it was around 70v each phase…..only done around 1200 miles since. However I still have a smidge over 14v at the battery at 4000rpm. Guess I better start saving

not good news
there is a guy on FB demagnetising flywheels which apparently cures your issues

Hmmm…..that might be an option…any idea what his details are ?
If I had £1100 lying around I’d get the 370w flywheel and stator from Griff, but alas not an option at the moment. I think I’m gonna see how it goes over the summer…I’ll connect a voltmeter to the battery so I can monitor the charging voltage as I ride, then replace the stator and fit a series regulator when the time comes.

Thinking ahead……..
When the time comes I’ll fit a series reg/rec and maybe mount it in the tailpiece away from the engine. I think the yellow cable from the stator to the rectifier is 12 awg but I’m not too sure. Any suggestions as to the type and cable size I need. I’ve been told that it needs to be able to manage maximum unregulated voltage which I guess is 75vac the maximum output according to the manual.

The wire size is more dependant upon the amperage it has to carry than the voltage.

That's what I thought however the supplier I contacted said their cable is only rated to 60volts and is not suitable.
12 awg îs rated to around 33amps, surely that's suitable regardless of its voltage capacity, even at 60 volts unregulated. Perhaps I'm over thinking this

Spoke to them last week....they won't touch my RSV stator due to the risk of premature failure.

I've fitted a Gen 1 stator in my Gen 2, works fine and a cheap fix, I shall be getting my flywheel sorted via the facebook contact.
Westcountry windings can be persuaded if you don't expect any guarantee, my last one lasted over 18k |

Andy
Gutted to hear this! I’ve a Gen1 stator I can post to you. I haven’t tested the pet but would assume it’s good and as Garin says it’s a cheap fix and can comfortably last for some time. Let me know |

I have a plan…….
As I can’t afford the permanent fix, I’ve ordered a Shindengen SH847 series reg/rec from Roadstercycles in the U.S. I’ve also ordered the T12 stator cooling kit, however he doesn’t ship to the UK unless your order is over £135 - luckily I have a mate who is on his way to visit his parents in Germany, so I had it shipped there. Replace the stator and that should sort it for a while. The 847 reg/rec is considerably bigger than the standard one so I may see if I can mount it in the tail piece by fabricating a mounting plate out of ally sheet….it will be a snug fit. |

So the SH847 arrived from Roadstercycles in Los Angeles along with the cables and connectors. Managed to fit it in the tailpiece. I got a secondhand stator £35 from eBay…..it was from a Falco. Built the looming myself, and I have 77vac each phase at 4000 rpm and 14.4vdc at the battery 😁 The new reg/rec runs considerably cooler than the Shunt OEM item…..you can place your hand on it and it’s just warm to the touch. There are only two wires from the regulator to the battery pos and neg terminals with an inline 30A automatic circuit breaker (the red block by the tip over sensor in picture 4). The original plug under the right fairing is blanked off and taped back. Just the T12 oil cooling kit to fit now. If this stator lasts for a year, I’ll be happy. |

Well done Andy.
Super install but then I’d expect no less from you mate. At £35 per year worst case I wish I’d done that on the past! Be good to see how it behaves. Glad you’re still stoked with it 👍🏻

The Royal Navy taught me well in my previous career when it came to Aircraft Maintenance in electrical installations and systems 😁
Yep still stoked…..and I still sit in the garage and just look at it….. Can’t believe how much cooler this new series rectifier is over the standard shunt unit ! |

Finally got the T12 kit......
I didn't use the jubilee clips supplied, but opted for the original Clic R type clamps as it looks more factory.

Hi All
Not long had an rsv1000r factory and almost immediately the stator has gone. New to these bikes it seems I have two options: the later flywheel and stator at a large cost or something like the west coast stator and series regulator. From everything I’ve found so far only the later flywheel option seems to last. Lots of the posts seem quite old so just wondering how the cheaper options have faired and any thoughts you all have to help me make a decision Thanks in advance Stewart
