Hi all.
When I'm pushing my bike around the garage I get a clonking noise from the gearbox. I've put it up on the workshop stand and I get the same thing, it clonks as i rotate it on neutral. Has anyone else had this ,? I'm thinking it's not good. Has anyone had this issue? Dennis.

Check the chain alignment, if it’s out it can make the front sprocket make a racket.

While you have the cover off, check for a loose front sprocket? Have you had the rear wheel out? Check alignment and that the axle is nut is tight. If you can't find it, remove chain from front sprocket and rotate front sprocket on it's own as this will help isolate where the noise is coming from. |

Cool, that's given me some ideas, I'll have an inspection this weekend. I've been trying to ignore it, but that doesn't fix anything.

Well, it's worse than that, it's dead Jim.
Pulled out rear wheel, no issues with wheel bearings. Took a closer look at front sprocket , ok there. Have it a pull and push and it has a lot of end float. By my eye crometer up to a mill. So. Fooked. Time to look for a replacement motor.

some Play along the axis of the output shaft is normal. If the bearings were shot there would likely be some radial play as well (side to side). Unless you think the play is excessive I wouldn’t write it off yet.
To knacker those bearings it would have to had an over tight chain for a reasonable length of time.

Can you feel it knock when you turn the front sprocket with no chain on?
I’ve had similar noises when pushing bikes around and in all cases it was stiff chain links. Like a knock or heavy click. Clean and lube sorted them out with the exception of once when I couldn’t free them and replaced the chain with no further issue.

I'm measuring 0.3mm end float. Chain has not been overtightened. I'm going to check another engine today to confirm that either 0.3mm is normal or excessive. But, when you losen the chain right off its quiet, when you put a bit of tension on it the clonk comes back.

End float meaning axial movement? Then as Spoonz said above, 0.3mm should be absolutely fine.

Yes, I hear you. I'm off to check another bike now, and I think it will confirm that mines normal, I haven't found a spec anywhere for end float. I suspect the design of the gearbox is tolerant of whatever float there is. Back in 2 hours.....

Your clutch basket also has a slight amount of end play as well.

Ok, bike is fine. 0.3mm float is normal. Chain must be too tight, 25mm slack is too tight for my bike. I've never had this before. I'll need to think on this. Thanks for everyone's help.

I run all my bikes between 25/35mm and have never had a problem, how old is the chain?.

It's done 25k now. But I've been testing my automatic chain oiler on it so there's almost no wear. The chain oiler is s long term project I've been working on. I use chainsaw bar oil, and a little goes a very long way. 1 drip every 2 minutes base rate is enough. And I use a temp sensor to determine the rate.
