Yes you do. And use plenty of Vaseline to seal with the underside of the tank

heres my airbox mod used the top part of the air box and cut the front off to slope it up to maximise the seal,i used 29mm door rubber that fits perfectly to the rim of the airbox no need to glue ebay number 320636044837,as you can see ive also used the top part to cut out the bracket to hold the filter in place, alot more secure.i got some silicone sealent from a dive shop to further enhance the seal to the tank and also purchased a k&n filter, all in £38.00

Well done that man. The picture of how you have secured the filter is so much better than how Ive tried to discribe it. Good job.

Anyone tried the mod that bollockchops has done to his Gen1 (see 6 posts above ) on a Gen2? Can you still get the box to seal to the underside of the tank? Questions, Questions, Questions before I start hacking my airbox to peices!!!

just curious ,as i might try this box, but anyone tried longer trumpets too? my days of fidling with 45 webbers longer trumpets gave more top end shorter torque (think it was that way round ) and as we have more torque than a hen night in the ladies loo maybe longer trumpets would be worth a go

I ran mismatched stacks for a while and going to try them again , I know they are not variable but , short stack in front of taller stack.

Great post. I am a little confused now however. All these mods are for the Gen 1 right? Can you do this or even need to do it on the Gen 2's?

Griff having dynoed them might be a better bet for a definitve answer but i believe that the gains were bigger on the Gen1 due to it having a smaller airbox capacity to start with than the Gen2 and a different intake route. With an intake on the highest pressure point of the nose there should be no shortage of air at speed on the Gen2 but maybe some improvements at low speed may be had. I'm sure there will be gains but not sure how much over say just a hi flow filter. |

Well I'm not hacking the top of my box.its v close to touching the tank all around.
If it gave 7 hp more then ok. But its induction noise is going to be even louder !!! |

Have you done the Gen 2 flap and duct mod first.
It makes them crisper I think , maybe placebo effect as all that work time effort :s got to help ... |

not done the flap and duct mod, but then I have not lifted the tank to view inside yet. What does the mod involve? Any pictures of what to do? Can tell I'm a bit of a picture freak. I always seem to ask for pictures!

if you do a search on Af1, Amauri (Aprilia USA tech at the time) did some dyno tests with/without the flapper mod. I'm sure it's still on there somewhere. He did post the graphs etc.
I think from memory it made zilch, niet, nada power difference and actually fueled worse at low revs by removing it. I did try it myself and found no discernable difference whatsoever good or bad. |

I can't remember were it came from but Probly previously mentioned site.
They removed all of the workings smoothed it off. I have the vac linked blanked off on mine but no definable different other than noise at the front of the bike. Going to map2 with k&n + blue flame gave mine allot more mid range. I was going to try the door seal gag ,even have a spare lid hear .But when I checked how close the box sat to the tank I lost interest and just enjoyed the bike. |

Your probably referring to the induction tube mod where someone cut out all of the obstructive plastic mouldings and used filler to smooth out the whole induction tract. I can't remember what figures he got but he was a racer i believe and was searching for top end so most of the gains would have been there. If you have the time and inclination, go for it. |

Right. So just to be sure, I won't gain much if any by an air box mod and flapper mod, if I have a Gen 2 model with a PC, can's, k&n.
If so I will just ride the thing rather than tweaking.
