I don't f*ckin believe it!! (in my best Victor Meldrew voice). The last time I used my bike, around October, it was struggling to start, if not put on optimate every night. I hoped it was the battery, as I replaced the alternator about 3 years ago. I was really pissed off, as I have had nowt but trouble with the bleedin thing. I just parked it in t'garage, and sulked. I was in a good mood yesterday, and as it was so mild, my mind turned to mi bike. Last night I went to test it. Its the f*ckin alternator again!! The last time I changed it, I put a MOSFET reg/rec on it, and upgraded the starter solenoid. I'm really, really pissed off, and the wife has told me to chuck it in t'river! I've had bikes without a break, since 1975, and never had any real problems with any of em, even my old 02 Mille. But this one...................AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!

Feel for you mate crap start to the season. Some gen2 bikes do seem far worse than others but I suppose that could be said of a lot of bikes. My first rsvr decided to fail the day I put it up for sale this time last year would of cost me more to fix then selling it cheap as a non runner griff bought it off me in the end. Stick with it you know that you'll forgive her once you open it up for the first time in months.

Some Gen2's have rogue flywheel magnets which pulse the stator due to the inconsistency. If your unlucky enough to have one it will eat stators indefinitely no matter what you do to the windings. For the cost of a used flywheel on evilbay I would change it along with the stator as belt and braces next time. If it was an electrex stator - they all do that sir, sh*t quality.

Aprilia Performance successfully sued electrex for supplying reg/recs that destroyed half a dozen stators in less than 1000 miles on each bike. They are a bunch of cowboys, rubbish product and they won't back it up at all.

Cheers for that cheery news, Spoonz.
I can't remember what make it was, unfortunately. I was a little low on oil, as I was gonna change it over the winter, could that have had an affect, as I know they're oil cooled.

Hi Foxy I am in't same boat lad. Just ordered a stator and rectifier from Germany hope it's okay and sorts the problem out. If not any input would be good, don't ya think? Heard stuff about wiring been naff, is there a cure for that? Is there anything that can be done when installing the new bits, to safe guard them?

Af1, did you happen to find a sweat spot on your AJS 410 with the Electrex?
I have refurbished my 410 and just can't seem to get a good spark. Tried it at 3.2 mm(.127") and 3.5mm (.139") BTDC and can't even get it to pop. Running a Champion N7YC and tried a N9YC plug. Compression is around 80 psi with a .10 + re-ringed and honed. Just can't get it. Any advice is good advice. Thanks. |

Sorry Andy, only just seen your post. The main improvements, come by taking out the brown connectors, and soldering them. Some people have used connector, but I soldered mine. There's loads of pics and advice knocking around on here, its just finding it.

Ye mine is a Gen2 but it had two connectors in it. One in the V and one at the rectifier. Did away with them both. Still FUBAR'D. So got a stator and R1 rectifier from a German company of EvilBay. Jobs a good un. But it wasn't plan sailing, put the Stator in the wrong way round and chopped though the stator wiring. But got it sorted now charging a treat, will keep my eye on it though. Bike nearly ready for the road, going to go out on it Sunday morning all been well.

Yeah, I soldered both my connectors, and fitted the R1 rectifier. Been great for 2 years, but the stator has gone again now. When mines running, I absolutely love it. It's just the constant problems I've had, that p*ss me off. My Gen1 was practically trouble free, hence why I got a Gen2. Hope you enjoy ya ride out on Sunday mornin. I'm working int middle of Sheffield, if you're out this way, come see me, I'll put kettle on. I work at Fountain Precinct, which is behind and above the Bessemmer pub.

BadApple, Was it a black 04 plate by any chance?
|

The fastest colour is black, and yes I know my bike isn't but I still stand by it.

Been out on the bike a total of 5 times, it's broken down every time, with out fail. German Stator and rectifier lasted 2 rides. Stator went first, melted the wiring at the stator. Fitted a replacement stator, then the R1 rectifier wouldn't output any voltage. Replaced the rectifier, just broke down on my way home just got in now. Not charging again. Could do with some sort off help, this bike is going to break me.
